The terms of this debate are so confused, when they're not being willfully misconstrued. This op-ed about the Katz piece is not, in fact, a defense of free speech. The WSJ op-ed page is the one "policing speech." 1/6https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-speech-police-at-princeton-11594769170 …

He incited violence by calling the student group terrorists. 1969 Supreme Court case makes that explicitly clear. Academic freedom is not the same thing as free speech. You can read
@Prof_FSultana excellent article about that.2 replies 1 retweet 5 likes -
Calling a Black student group "terrorist" is outrageous and racist and increases the likelihood of violence against that group. I'm not sure it fits SCOTUS's definition of an incitement to "imminent lawless action," though, but I don't know what if anything courts have said...

It's not just about the label. It's about where it was published, what audience it was intended to stir up, & what the term may bring in terms of the targeted students. It is not about free speech or academic freedom. This is a question about safety & keeping students safe.

This is what the institution has to address. Other institutions literally have stopped having certain speakers b/c of the issue of safety & violence. And those are outside speakers. So now we are in close quarters on campus. How is this a safe environment for these students?

All the alt-right folks on campuses have used tactics that include doxxing students, continuous terrorized stalking, etc. so exactly how does Princeton deal when a faculty member incites stochastic violence on students. They are not safe in this "learning" environment.

I was addressing whether what he did counts as incitement according to the SCOTUS decision. It’s not clear to me that it does. I consider student safety a separate issue from that point.
