That Harper's piece is a WTF. So here we are and I am now going to do a thread about free speech and academic freedom. Because people seem unable to understand what those things are especially in higher ed circles. You can begin here w/ @Prof_FSultana: https://www.acme-journal.org/index.php/acme/article/view/1715 …

Thanks for sharing this piece. I found it immensely insightful, but also quite frustrating as well. While I agree with the author’s concerns about anti-intellectualism and illiberalism on the ‘right’, she offered no critique of the way these are manifested in the ‘left.’

It seemed like the author assumed that legitimate scholarship on the ‘right’ was not possible and that good scholarship can only come from the ‘left.’ Again, I think Prof Sultana did an excellent job at explaining academic freedom/free speech. But the piece felt one sided.

This is something I struggle; I agree wholeheartedly with the call for free speech and academic freedom/rigor, and I am terrified by the increasing polarity and anti-intellectualism in our world.

But I don’t know how we move forward if academics can only come to ideologically pure conclusions set by a particular group of gatekeepers. I think viewpoint diversity is needed (even crappy ones) if we want to expose poor scholarship and arguments across idealogical spectrums.

We can’t dismisses ideas we don’t agree with because they don’t conform to our own idealogies in the same way we shouldn’t agree with scholarship simply because it confirms our biases. We need rigorous debate. But then again the problem of ant-intellectualism rears its ugly head.

I say all of this in good faith because it is something I really struggle with.

The article is in a peer-reviewed journal. But that was my point with "the moon is made of cheese" example. I literally was trying to think of the most non-controversial, partisan thing (though these days, apparently this might still be partisan) to put it through definitions.

I don’t think I said anything against peer review or the fitness of Prof Sultana’s article for publication (it is a helpful piece). I fear that when we don’t engage with bad scholarship that we allow it to fester and grow out of sight. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

And not just ‘bad scholarship’ but ‘bad ideas.’
