I have been off social media b/c of family stuff so only just caught up. I am angry to see NBPOC on #MedievalTwitter pulling this misogynoir & repeating White supremacist conspiracy theories. When did “critique” meant spouting fascist talking points? #ShakeRace #RaceB4Racehttps://twitter.com/erik_kaars/status/1272886332122071057 …

A thread by Prof. Green that criticizes the historiography of Dr. MRO's recent article about how we talk about the links between COVID & the Black Death has been making the rounds. I just want to highlight one thing about the reactions to Prof. Green's thread. #MedievalTwitter

I always wonder what the investment is in misreading in order to tear down someone who has put in the work of dismantling white supremacy in the field. Are we still as hungry for the approval of the white gaze? Can there only ever be one of us while they are countless?

And at this moment, really. NOW. Because the post clearly pointed out how white medievalist men were writing all those op-eds but never discussed race and particularly the racialized toll of COVID-19? Like NOW?!?!

Seriously. It seems there was an axe to grind and that there people more than eager to celebrate and support it.

Yup. Because why? Medieval pandemics if compared w/ current pandemics should address race and especially Black necropolitics. How is that even something to object to now and also with a public humanities piece?

Demanding the same citationality from a public humanities piece means that you’ve also deliberately misread the genre.
