Think about optics and consider the implications of all white/western ethics and aDNA discussions.👇🏼 I will not be accepting DMs or replies from those involved. If I get them, I’ll block immediately… ‘cause I shouldn’t be the only one feeling like I’m tweeting to brick walls. https://twitter.com/riveramichael/status/1206614815147470849 …pic.twitter.com/NiHoOyiMkh

At least some folks are aware of the problem, and actively interested in having more PoC in the discipline, but there's a disconnect somewhere. Personally I think it's the perennial Old White Men Problem.

It's not the old white men. I think we need to move away from that thinking because in *my* field and others the white women who are replacing them (b/c that equals diversity and progress) are replicating this institutional gatekeeping and racism.

When the movement to remove and replace the term "Anglo-Saxon" took off, people don't seem to realize how many mid-career & *younger* white women dropped off and out of the conversation. The feedback I received was I (as a woman of color) should 'wait my turn' like they did.

I've had both the 'wait my turn' situations and also sentiments along the lines of I 'had' my turn as a man in academia. Because the Indigenous working class brown guy has had the same access to academia as every other man...

Some serious WTF racist AF BS. #Solidarity and all that. Also it's textbook Cheryl Harris's "Whiteness as Property" essay and it's full settler colonial whiteness as territorial colonization: https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/1341787.pdf?seq=1 …

Our mentors, PIs and postdocs don’t incorporate enough of this scholarship in regular ECR training. So it’s really up to every junior scholar (white and BIPOC) to find out there’s a problem on their own, and by chance or recommendation, stumble into this discourse on whiteness.
