Hey #historytwitter, I need to learn. I've just begun teaching premodern global history and I am finding theoretical frameworks to understand early cultures in a useful comparative way difficult to find OR adopted wholesale from modern GH. Can anyone suggest anything? Please?!

Yep, good call. And I definitely think engaging with theories of postcolonialism, the premodern subaltern etc, are very helpful in understanding the distant past. But too much of that work (the application of theory) for premodern cultures is just beginning.*

I also wonder if this relates back to the conversation we had that night in Halifax, that historians are so focussed on the particularities of a given context that they eschew critical theory and/or comparative explorations? I don't know, but it is frustrating.
