Some medievalists mad about the current debates around the term A-S just love to screenshot twitter and complain about people in Facebook groups. I don't understand it. There are buttons to reply on here. Do they have accounts? We can talk if y'all want.

The disturbing trend is that they keep adding new scholars to poke fun at. I won't even say who. I find what they say about my colleagues and friends hurtful. "How could ____________ who works at ____________ make this argument?" "Isn't __________ a historian?" Just stop.

I teach a lot of English Composition. This is a complete breakdown of discourse. Common ground and identification are impossible when one party approaches communication in this way. I tell my students to not even consider bad faith actors like this in their work.

These are active scholars. They host panels, publish, and teach classes. Some might sit on hiring committees and award fellowships. That is troubling.

If a colleague is convinced they need to use A-S in their work, fine. That is academic freedom. It's their scholarship and their classroom. Much of the field is moving on and many might tell you why.

Characterizing work to move on from A-S as a lexical police state is not helpful. Abusing colleagues over it is especially unhelpful and unwelcome. It should stop.

you will enjoy this. Academic freedom is about research-based, evidential analysis in relation to quality. At the moment the A-S is not winning w/ the evidence. But hey, that's not as important as white supremacy, nostalgia, nationalism, etc.

Exactly. No one is policing their classroom but when the journals, conferences, presses, and curriculum committees have all moved on from A-S for responsible reasons grounded in scholarship, what is left?
