I don't believe I did misread or misrepresent the room, Sjoerd, but perhaps I'm wrong. I do want to apologize for misinterpreting your reference to screenshots earlier in the thread, however.

I mean, idk about the room but two papers talking about how BIPOC in the field are “extremists”? How can that at all be interpreted in good faith?

I don't believe that either of the two papers in question frames BIPOC as "extremists." Utz's talk focused on what he saw as damaging rhetoric disparaging scholars who are insufficiently anti-racist. 1/

The point of Good's paper was that it's a bad idea to combat WS use of medieval imagery with historical inaccuracy. 2/

In the paper and the Q&A Utz said the the two "sides" (ie ws & bipoc) used similar rhetoric and social media tactics. And said bipoc were damaging conversation, the field et al by demanding people adhere to a "party line" thtat he didn't specify.

Language uses such as extreme, slacktivst, outrage culture , misplaced anger, etc is in itself inflammatory. Not saying they cannot use it. Just saying the rest of us can disagree and voice that disagreement.

I agree with you completely. And I support 100% your right to voice that disagreement, Emily. I thought that your comments at the panel were great. My only point in all of this has been that I'm glad the panel occurred, and I hope it leads to more dialogue, not less.

And, again, I wish that the makeup of the panel had been different. I certainly hope that the makeup of future panels is different.

Representative and relative credibility of panel aside, might one live podcast future ones? Leverage the tech to enfranchise those who cannot attend in person? Or is my privilege blinding me to a risk MOC would face in participating? Probably.

And really some of these folks who literally spent two years spewing about how I did not have violent & rape threats coming to me. #MeToo and all that but no. Why would I want to be near basically a conspiracy theorist who wants to harm me & upholds rape culture.

👆this is such a good point. I am all for academic debate but as I have said in other venues: if one side is advocating or aligned with violence, it isn't an academic dialogue. It isn't "both sides" or assuming good faith.

I am tired of friends & colleagues being threatened. I am tied of racist, mysogenist, antisementic, homophobic, transphobic, islamaphobic attacks in my communities. I am tired of the attackers & their allies being presented as a reasonable party I need to be nice to.

Figured as much. Apologies for dignifying their discourse with comment. There truly is no reasoning to be had with that ilk. But complacency is a luxury I no longer accept, and I follow your lead as I can.
