Just a side note. I attended so I could question the panel. I think many others did too. I didn't expect it to be anti-racist & I was right. I don't think an intentionally all white panel should get to disseminate their narrative without in-person pushback.

The handringing was mainly from the panel. Also having never interacted on or offline with Franke, he has blocked me. I assume this is because I attended the panel & asked a question.

thank you so much, for coming informed and for challenging the narrative. sounds like William didn’t quite read the room (or misrepresented it for reasons only he may know)

I don't believe I did misread or misrepresent the room, Sjoerd, but perhaps I'm wrong. I do want to apologize for misinterpreting your reference to screenshots earlier in the thread, however.

I mean, idk about the room but two papers talking about how BIPOC in the field are “extremists”? How can that at all be interpreted in good faith?

I don't believe that either of the two papers in question frames BIPOC as "extremists." Utz's talk focused on what he saw as damaging rhetoric disparaging scholars who are insufficiently anti-racist. 1/

The point of Good's paper was that it's a bad idea to combat WS use of medieval imagery with historical inaccuracy. 2/

What historical inaccuracy? This is a frequent claim, but I haven't seen evidence of it yet. I've seen nitpicking of minor points.

His points--and I want to emphasize that these are HIS points, not mine--were that the black eagle shield carried by St. Maurice was really a symbol of the Holy Roman Empire, not of him personally. 1/

And that the shield in the photo was produced as "Viking" imagery by the company that makes it and so may have had only coincidental similarity to the shield portrayed in the painting of St. Maurice 2/

So basically he repeated my Time article. I expect he did not cite me.
