Not touching the YA controversy of the week. Just noting that in my 10 years as a professor, folks from all parts of academe have shown their entire ass, and TDF has all kinds of reviews... I do not have a trade book deal, but I have tenure at an Ivy. I won't punch down.

That's what many don't get about cancel culture. It's all about punching up, not down. (I'm agnostic about lateral punching among authors. I kinda find it weird, because in the Entmoot, you get definite side eye for that, but I digress.)

I will admit that I'll subtweet. I will talk about aspects of feedback I agree with and disagree with. I will check you if you come for me directly on the right day. But I will not use my platform to directly go after someone with less power.

I mean, who does that? If your life and career is about young people, you'd know that's bullying. (That's why the accusation this winter that I'd go after a child was a poisonous lie from the pit of hell. Are you kidding me? Why, because Black Woman = Monster? Who raised you?)

I could link to reviews I disagree with, or think aren't fair. I could post and rant about my course evals. Or, I could be there for my students and mentees, shitpost on the Trek boards, tweak my syllabi, and inch toward progress on my next writing projects. I know my choice.

Ebony Elizabeth ThomasVerified account @EbonyteachThanks for letting me know about this.@vulture, I do not appreciate being quoted here without being informed that you were doing it. (This is the second time the reporter in question has used her platform to pit me against authors.) https://t.co/iAt2PwuECnShow this thread1 reply 19 retweets 106 likesShow this thread -
(I'd be furious, but Black women aren't allowed to get angry, so.)

I'm trying to see the bright side of it, but I feel so stung and disrespected. Again. (Inside Higher Ed did this during the Little House & Wilder Award stuff last year.) No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

I'm sorry. I am furious, but even more than that, I'm hurt.
