Guy Halsall has been one of most progressive voices on the question of Late Antique & Early Medieval ethnicity. He has also been a great influence on my work, and he's a downright good man. The sheer level of abuse he has faced here online by certain academics is a disgrace. https://t.co/R1ukkDQtMv

But the complaints are about his bullying of early career scholars—particularly people of color—on twitter because they were speaking up about racism in the UK. Are you saying that that’s acceptable behavior?pic.twitter.com/840J6OtFzA

#MedievalTwitter let's be clear here. All these people, which looks so coordinated since we've been talking on here for weeks, coming out in the last 2 days w/ the same line--Guy is the most progressive etc.--looks planned. But all these white men (either senior colleagues) 1/1 reply 0 retweets 12 likes -
(or his advisees which seems deeply awkward since what is the retaliation if they say nothing) saying he's so great & so progressive. Please notice that his comments have been sexist, racist, punching down to BIPOC, WOC, and grad. students. Your experience isn't ours. 2/

#MedievalTwitter in fact, instead, why not read some scholarship on how racists, sexists, & even white supremacists are perfectly "nice" to those like them, but not so much to those who are raced, gendered, etc.@kelly_j_baker has written this, & as a historian of the KKK 3/1 reply 2 retweets 17 likes -

#MedievalTwitter has been clarifying @ the continued white privilege (often senior research) to actually see from the point of view of jr. folks, women, BIPOC, etc. So, "Nice, Decent Folks" doesn't mean they are not racist, sexist, or white supremacist:http://www.kellyjbaker.com/nice-decent-folks/ …1 reply 1 retweet 13 likes -

and as the fascists/white supremacists on here want to use what Guy is saying as fodder for their digital white supremacy on other platforms to reify their Make the Middle Ages white again, you have to consider what he's doing that makes it so easy to use him as scholarly backup.

Also, you & other white apologists are trying to say b/c Guy is "progressive" he can't be racist, sexist, etc. Wrong. Racism is structural. So is sexism. This is not about individual personality traits, or "niceness," it's @ how people address structures.

Guy addresses these structures as if he has the privilege & wherewithal to punch back b/c he is being critiqued for doing/saying something that shows his racism, sexism etc. So do tell us how "twat, stupid, imperialist" is "progressive." Waiting.

Or that's fine b/c it's directed at non-white medievalists, even when we are not talking @ him. Explain how not sexist, racist he is, let alone how white scholars wants to condone such sexist, racist behavior. You are supporting racism, sexism, punching down #MedievalTwitter

#MedievalTwitter what kind of message are you sending to your colleagues, your students, the field that it's perfectly fine for Guy to call medievalists of color racist/sexist/ableist names "twat, stupid, imperialist" even when in the case of 2 of these incidents, neither of us1 reply 1 retweet 12 likes -

#MedievalTwitter were discussing him or replying to him. Instead, it's just fine for him to show his total racist, sexist, ableist self in randomly making inexcusable comments to colleagues & grads. b/c this is how medieval studies should function?1 reply 0 retweets 11 likes - Show replies
