#MedievalTwitter Just a reminder that we have the example of Allen Frantzen for people wringing their hands about how his scholarship has done so much for queer theory. Of course if you read his scholarship, you would realize it's deeply racist and also he is against queer theory

So
#MedievalTwitter someone's scholarly work or declaration that they are antifascist etc. etc. does nothing to actually demonstrate if they are actually interested in antifascism, antiracism, and the work it requires to do those things.1 reply 1 retweet 22 likesShow this thread -
#MedievalTwitter Or I can point to the piece that came out in September. Tolkien demonstrated his antifascism, but he was racist and sexist. He was also my academic grandfather. If the fascists love your stuff and quote you, you have to consider why. https://daily.jstor.org/the-question-of-race-in-beowulf/ …2 replies 0 retweets 30 likesShow this thread -
and
#MedievalTwitter I wrote "Teaching in a Time of White Supremacy" but we need another piece "Being a Scholar in a Time of White Supremacy" The point holds for both, what are you doing to make yourself & what you say & what you do not be fascist/white supremacist catnip?2 replies 4 retweets 36 likesShow this thread -
So no
#MedievalTwitter you are not antifascist or antiracist if you cannot even deal w/ structural racism, sexism (that involves#MeToo
sexual assault), & of course, let's talk about the clear threats of retaliation that really show how politically left you are. Please.1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
Returning back to the original tweet, let's look how terrible the folks who decided to uphold Frantzen & his festschrift look now that we are deep in late fascism. So history will basically discuss those folks as fascist/MRA supporters. That is the legacy.

Please notice that a number of the people most vocal about ISXX & very abusive behavior in relation to UK white male senior scholars are ECRs, grad., & independent scholars. Ppl vulnerable have the option to not speak, but is there a reason to tweet defenses?

What it really shows is how much a company shop the higher ed system is & basically that retaliation & punishment is expected if you don't toe the senior scholar line--even when it's racist, sexist, is catnip to the fascists. What does that say about your system #MedievalTwitter
