Never completely bought Star Trek's version of future history until this year. I thought the idea of strongmen taking over the world was super silly, and that part of the lore jarred me as an artifact of the pre-WWII past... Looking around the world, I stand corrected.

The science fiction and dystopian fictional worlds have really predicted way too much of our now.

You know, I thought we were supposed to read that stuff and do better. Silly me.

I know I feel like I’m constantly going “that wasn’t supposed to be an instruction manual”

We have world leaders screaming into our high tech screens the way the instigators of the worst war in human history screamed horrible things into radios 75-80 years ago. I want to shake everyone who let this happen *silly.*

Meanwhile, the liberal establishment says we're on social media too much, and anyway, we're not civil or polite. This is them:pic.twitter.com/PDDkPjw2CO

While the Ivory Tower fiddles, the planet burns. (Not even wit. It's just all so sad.)

The planet burns; the violent attacks continue; the massacres; the destruction of everything just continues. And apparently the Ivory Tower still doesn't want to take a stand b/c "both sides" and all that.

Yes, and how dare the Rest of Us be uncollegial and uncivilized by speaking out after all they've done for us?! (I think that's how their thinking goes.)

It is just so macabre and all I can do is basically do unending rounds of gallows humor about it because seriously what else is there to do. Oh look, violent fascist nazis trying to come for you vs. people saying, maybe it's a bad idea to uphold white supremacy in academia.
