Academic freedom isn't about protecting any individual's right to spout of whatever views they happen to have. It's about giving the academic community as a whole freedom to judge the validity of scholarly research without interference.

In practice, academic freedom often hinges on whether particular individuals can be fired, but that's because the firing would ultimately be a decision from outside the academic circle proper (the Board of Trustees, in most American institutions).
