My 1st yr as Asst Prof came to an abrupt halt when I took an emergency leave bc of threats I received in response to lectures on poverty, gender & racial inequality. I was a WoC on an open-carry campus— not gonna happen.

We have to stop thinking that simply acknowledging minorities’ disadvantages is enough. Telling WoC that students will undermine their authority, knowledge and expertise or will, in some cases, be hostile, does not hold perpetrators accountable.

Institutions need to do more about supporting faculty of color, junior faculty, and holding students accountable to behavior in & outside of classrooms. Diversity hiring initiatives are void, at best, without research, teaching, mentorship support.

To be clear, this is a critique of and suggestion to all universities as diversity initiatives are universal. I first heard of the challenges I’d face as a 1st gen prof of color in my undergrad McNair days. Convo hasn’t changed much since 2008.
