If you’re a tenured faculty member presenting at #Kzoo2019 consider mentioning how the IMC has pushed out BIPOC scholars and forced them to boycott the conference. Keep pressure on the organizers. Mention @SeetaChaganti’s letter and systemic harassment of faculty.

Too often we see rooms full of white scholars who refuse to engage with racism, or who neutrally claim credit for anti-racist activism by simply amplifying or consuming the work of BIPOC scholars, when the real work often falls to marginalized faculty. Don’t do this.

The reality is that IMC rejected FIVE panels on anti-racist pedagogy organized by marginalized faculty while accepting similar panels organized by white faculty. It’s not an omission. It’s systemic administrative racism designed to control that conversation.

If medieval studies is going to combat white supremacy, it needs to be de-colonized, made equitable, made welcoming to BIPOC scholars who are doing vital work. Privileged scholars need to keep mentioning this—especially when it’s uncomfortable. Lift up, don’t punch down.

It’s about showing BIPOC students that they are reflected in medieval lit—that they’ve always been there and the field welcomes their voices. Scholars are angry about this and that anger needs to be heard, not dismissed. We need to sit in discomfort and propose solutions.

@KzooICMS should think carefully about how to rebuild trust with scholars of color for 2020. Craft a CFP that is focused on the work of BIPOC scholars and which centres work being done on anti-racist pedagogy and fighting white supremacy. A real change—not just a gesture.2 replies 9 retweets 21 likesShow this thread
Though, #IMC2019 @IMC_Leeds is also not off the hook for their white nonsense. They also refuse to address the safety of their most marginal scholars. What is the point of a Code of Conduct w/out any enforcement.
