remembering 6+ years ago I gave a talk that dared to say in public that weev was a fascist, before many knew it. i was brutally attacked by the audience, demeaned, insulted. & *then* some of my colleagues came up to me & "quietly" told me that the problem was that I was upset.

then, a scholar whose work I briefly discussed in the paper read only two paragraphs of it, completely misrepresent my argument, publicly said it was "pathetic" that I'd been given a PhD, & unleashed 100s of trolls on me

in the interests of (as bizarre as this sounds) proving that the scholar and their pals don't use the affordances of the digital to promote hate. then later published a book about weev that does not mention he is a worldwide Nazi leader.

Internet has created a low barrier of entry attack vector for mobilizing attacks...with no actual consequences. This platform alone is full of extremists, and it’s never been easier to abuse people. This is the new warfare. It’s only just starting.

i thought I had a quote somewhere from the early days of Wikileaks with one of the cyber-types (maybe Barlow) celebrating the first shots in the information war (with no suggestion of who the war was among, etc) but can't find it

I ran some social stuff for a billion dollar company years ago, building "healthy" communities. I had to filter thousands of racist/nazi comments a week, and keep the nutball factor of forums to a minimum. But I kept it a clean and positive environment. But that was before...

Now with bots and large Twitter followings, you can't even have a decent argument. If you try to have a debate, a single person with 500k followers can impact your life. It isn't one on one, but many on one. Being a bully is not only easy, almost expected as you play to your fans

In the name of "free speech" and "anti-censorship" we built an Internet without rules for the betterment of society. What we have is a global toxic experiment where even the early luminaries are wondering how it went all wrong, yet are still promoting the same ideals as above.
