Hugely problematic for whom? "New" is not a synonym for "empty". Besides, it's their (Jamie & Claire's) new world, not The new world.
...finding a problem for every solution?
Technically, it's not "new" for Claire as she lived in N. America for decades. The way the promo shot is set up is directly feeding into visual rhetorical ideas of "The New World" (as empty, untouched, virgin wilderness).https://www.thoughtco.com/american-settler-colonialism-4082454 …
This is an interesting and thoughtful pov, thank you for posting it. One would hope that Outlander would consider these issues if they want to be a serious and relevant drama.
To European immigrants of that era, America was the “new world.” Outlander didn’t shy away from Jamie beating Claire in S1 either. This was the 18th century mindset.
Claire is not from the 18th c. And this discussion in the books discusses settler colonialism and Its genocidal violence. This season also includes multiple Black & Native American characters, one of whom is also from the future. So why would a contemporary show use the term?
Very true, but it was a new world for the Europeans who came there in search of a new home. My 'new' home was lived in by many families before I bought it.
