I didn't read this as a "farewell" at all. This is the career I've had: "We need to develop something that more organically allows for people working horizontally across geographic regions, or vertically across temporal units .., to come together based on a shared something."

I agree. I have been calling myself an inquisition historian for a while now, because that allows a broader range. And because of the hopeless entanglement of ‘medieval’ with ideas antithetical to the study of history.
