HGTV is one of many reasons why I can't claim to be radical. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized the women in my family's love for the channel wasn't just an innocent escape from the rest of the cesspool that is cable TV.

I think that those of us who grew up in the 'hood during a certain spacetime always had New Construction in Suburbia presented to us as the ultimate marker of success. There's that. Also, a form of futile resistance as a Black woman is to make sure that your home's impeccable.

Because some of us are the daughters of generations of Black women who spent 12+ hours per day as domestics, cleaning the homes of middle & upper class White people... whose own homes were spotless AF.

Toni Morrison's written about this, and so have other canonical Black US writers. For many of us, our homes (sometimes) & our personal appearance (sometimes) were the only thing we could control.

Yesterday, I saw a viral video of a Black etiquette school that friends and family were sharing. The comments were almost all positive: yes, our kids need this, show the girls how to sit and stand and bend and cross their legs like ladies. Teach the boys chivalry... Me:
