Instead of seeing myself as teaching a language, I see myself as connecting my students to communities. It changes everything.

Here's a thread by on how she's celebrating in her classes. Most (if not all?) of the resources she shares are created by Black organizations or individuals:

Not sure about the Blackness of all the creatives behind these films, but the list has some gems for cultural material for Spanish, French, and Portuguese language classes.

This is a topic I've sat with a lot over the past few months. This piece is imperfect and I am no expert, but I feel strongly enough about the ideas I wanted to share it. Thanks to all the folks who helped, including !

I also think so many people just need to learn how to say, "Thank you for pointing that out. I realize I have caused harm, I apologize, and I am going to take some time to learn more and do better."

bought a few readers that never made it on my shelves once I actually read the story & passed on a few more after reading the back cover. It is hard to be choosy in because we have so few readers but as said, better pass than perpetuate harmful narratives.

Frame one: Fred from scooby doo reaching for a masked character saying “who is this new character of color?”

Frame two: unmasked man and Fred saying “it was the same white character all along!”

I've noticed this happens in WL publishing. The characters and settings changed to market to other languages, but stories stay the same.

Is our professional community a place where the highest value is that we make each other FEEL really good about the work we do? Or are we cultivating a community whose highest value is to ACTUALLY DO really good work, even if that means hearing hard truths along the way?

I feel like I should add here: no, praise is not always positive. In fact, all praise and no criticism gives us a very skewed vision of the world.

Many of you have asked me in recent days: What can I read that will give me a deeper, richer understanding of Central American migration, culture and identity? Here's a great place to start.

The same questions can/should be asked about conferences, leadership initiatives (like LILL), events/activities put on by our professional organizations, etc.
