Facebook doesn’t want porn on their platform so there is no porn on their platform. Facebook vaguely wants people to think Facebook is fighting false news stories so they talk a lot about fighting false news stories while false stories continue to circulate widely.https://twitter.com/kevinroose/status/1054484829759246336 …

FB is worth $447B. They can probably afford to screen out fake stuff if they’re motivated to do it.

The problem is that FB architecture favors fake news. Specially because it mixes "news" with supposed friends.

I don’t think that’s the main problem. The main problem is that if you divide the stories into real and fake, you’re going to be criticized as biased.

There is ALSO this issue, but the confusion between news or debate and "friendship" on the same thing favors fake news. It also favors that kind of circular argumentation that we are used to seeing on Facebook.

Sure that’s the algorithm. That also makes it easier to see what’s being shared and prioritize eliminating or deprioritizing false things that are getting traction. If I stop seeing my (hypothetical) uncle’s fake garbage I won’t know if he stopped sharing or FB took it down.

Facebook's algorithm uses your "friends" to put content on your timeline. If your "friends" are the gatekeeper for news that will help the spread of fake news. That favors content that's easily shareable, not good content.

And fake news is the most shareable content possible. If you are not on Facebook then your uncle will be sharing fake news with other people. But anyone that's on Facebook will be subject to fake news.

FB uses humans to filter images. They just started using AI but they have not gotten rid of humans. Humans can identify fake news easier than machines can at this point. FB can remove the fake news; it just doesn’t want to.
