Not all that insane! The Overseas Railroad was meant to get a RR connection within sailing range of the Panama Canal, in an age of coal-fuelled ships. Oil displaced coal faster than they anticipated, so ships bypassed Key West for better ports farther north.

FEC is great, Flagler was wilin out. C&O Canal is of course another one of those great "large and quickly obsoleted infrastructure" projects; train engineers yelling like "aaaa suckers!" at lockhouses as they went past and shit https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=0_AsMw9VMXEC&pg=GBS.PA113 …pic.twitter.com/b2wqXFnj97

FEC is still insane, they started running gravel trains and other low priority traffic at 60-70mph to make room for brightline, lol
-
That's the good kind of insane, though. (Clearly they should electrify to recapture their energy expenditure, but one step at a time.)
-
(We are also clearly steering well around FEC's somewhat reprehensible record of strikebreaking in the 1960s, but there is not a good example of non-reprehensible adaptation to dieselization from any management team or rail union in the US, so, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
