honestly, that's still fucked up to me. my hometown has a straight up train station in it, it's a cheap bar & grill now. the spot for the train station is so perfect too. same with several other towns i've worked in- just, perfectly placed obvious train stations, that aren't.

It also doesn't help the here in the US freight is far more important then passengers due to the shear size of the country, it's far more efficient to travel by plane and have mass amounts of cargo go by train, even just by overall tonnage. AMTRAK may not even be a thing by 2030.
-
it is in fact not more efficient to travel by plane by any stretch of the imagination it has the single highest carbon footprint and energy cost of any form of travel in fact
-
I was more talking about distance and time to travel that distance. if you want to talk fuel and carbon footprint we would be here for months arguing what is the actual worst thing overall when it comes to traveling.

i'm in montgomery. our train station became a bank, our train shed, a covered parking lot for that bank and a decent thai restaurant. i don't bank there, but i do enjoy that thai place once every 3-5 months, so private ownership is optimistically 4/365 as good as infrastructure

The town I grew up in had a train station that is now train museum. This is the first time I ever thought about why.

my life would be markedly easier if all the places that used to have passenger service still did. west marin had narrow gauge rail, ffs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwestern_Pacific_Railroad … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pacific_Coast_Railroad …

FYI my town doesn't have a railroad depot because it was destroyed from a 1960s train collision, so it was an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT type of private mismanagement that deprived of us of our train station

I've got a few prior co-workers who could learn a thing or two from the rail roads
