One obvious takeaway is that the commanding heights of universities, esp. public universities with political appointees, are incredibly conservative. We are told about the weaknesses of conservatives in media and on campus: but they were able to demonize the work of a Black scholar to the point that political appointees chose to ignore a peer review evaluation of scholarship and decided they knew better.pic.twitter.com/CvhtGbZ2sl

As soon as university leaders start making tenure decisions for obviously political reasons, that creates a chilling effect, eroding campus speech. Faculty will be less inclined to speak truth to power, or take critical stances. Is that the campus we want?pic.twitter.com/ogjkItSxqc

The bar was already low for UNC, which closed down a anti-poverty research center in 2015 after its leader criticized conservative policies. These are actual, substantive threats about what can and can't be talked about on campus.https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/02/19/unc-board-panel-wants-shut-down-center-poverty-led-faculty-member-who-criticizes …

I understand you may find academics whiny or elitist - often fair criticism. And faculty governance is imperfect. But trust me, you want those people rather than politicians or a politicized administration being the guardians of campus speech.

The people responding to Nikole Hannah-Jones being denied tenure because they think her work is not scholarly enough are telling on themselves by supporting a tenure review process where actual scholarly judgment was replaced with evaluations made by political appointees.

Not that you needed it, but here is a longer thread from
@JeffreyASachs about the degree to which the conservative UNC Board of Governors has politicized and demeaned higher education scholarship in North Carolina.https://twitter.com/JeffreyASachs/status/1395073262929973252?s=20 …Näytä tämä ketju -

On Fox, politicizing the tenure process to punish those you disagree with is being presented not as an attack on campus speech but as a victory, a model to emulate on other campuses. https://twitter.com/martincarantano/status/1395319829226299393/video/1 …

I saw this developing. That this should happen to the journalism school (where I also graduated) makes it particularly egregious, as free speech is a cornerstone to what we do.

Yep. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of my alma mater.
