Every so often I am reminded to reassess my 'gap year' experiences in Ghana and Togo... Of course, I naively thought I was fairly critically conscious even then, but I fear my eyes still have a long way to open.

"The way we determines the ways we support adolescents" - important commentary on shifting the frame to scaffold support, agency & empowerment, rather than paternalistic protection

Paper by et al. is a must-read for those interested in SES and language: Excited to see this multimethod work that examines a potential explanation for the SES word gap. And it moves the focus of intervention from parents to structures.

Fascinating stuff on social and geographic mobility, beliefs in meritocracy, elites and the role of London. Almost wishing I hadn't escaped it and could be there to hear from authors tonight...

As the world's elite gather in Davos to discuss climate breakdown, it's worth remembering who's responsible for this crisis: "The richest 1% may emit 30 times more than the poorest 50%, and 175 times more than the poorest 10%" (Oxfam, 2015).

Me, on exclusions, booths & knife crime. Because I’m fed up of us public services pointing fingers at each other while the government has the last laugh.

Let's hope those at arguing for investment in health remember that governments' ability to spend depends a lot on tax revenue. We need international commitment to make sure multinational companies doing business in low-resource countries pay their fair share

Analysis shows spending on youth services in England has reduced from £1.357bn in 2010/11 to £398m in 2018/19 – a 71 per cent cut. However, spending on CYP services as a whole has increased due to more ‘crisis’ spending, e.g. safeguarding

Closely following today and their (unfortunately not so shocking) report on overtime in academia in the Netherlands, and its damaging effects. The current system is unsustainable and we all need to keep working towards collective solutions.
