Do you think it's OK for a standards org to use, e.g., Google Analytics on their specs?

My answer is "No"---but I really wish I could get better data on what devices/browsers/geographies/etc. view my specs.

Why? It's just a tool. You can turn off the enhanced demographic analysis and then it just because a basic user agent analyzer

Tracking users is not something a standards org should do IMO. And users shouldn't need to trust that certain settings are set by the org.

I get what you're saying, but I also don't think it's fair that standards orgs shouldn't be allowed normal quantitative data collection

I think it's still an active discussion whether client-side analytics are "normal".

This is a rather aggressive stance. Would you also say retail stores aren't allowed to track aggregate metrics of visitation?

I have different expectations between a store and a standards organization.

unclear what the actual benefits a standards org gets from google analytics. amount of reader isn't really a measure of success, right?

Screen resolution, user agent to customize layout/CSS used; comparative popularity of specifications vs. their maturity; trackbacks...

In short, the fact that people install browser extensions or choose browsers specifically to block analytics tracking warns me off.

I felt less weird about it by introducing a clear privacy policy and method to opt out of tracking.

we use GA on the node.js website but not the offline, local docs, only the online ones *however* we have an extra scrip to honour DNT

No, please. I don't want my word documents to be tracking me. So not my specs either... A custom anonymous stuff would be ok tho.

The tracking code should be maintained on GitHub and stats collected should be documented, use-case driven, and anonymous.

It's ok .. if I don't like being tracked I'm using an extension which blocks it anyways, given I'm a dev who knows this if I go to spec site
