Attempts to indoctrinate students are usually stymied by their seldom doing the reading.

There's more. Faculty aren't just failing to indoctrinate students -- they probably aren't even trying. A university's Lib:Con ratio has NO observable effect on student political beliefs, and students who spend the most time with faculty actually become more *moderate*.

If there WERE any patriots remaining in the GOP, this soaring oratory in praise of truth and duty would melt hearts. But there is not.

In high school, my preacher had an affair with a woman he was supposed to be counseling. Another preacher decided to stop the refugee ministry to “save” them from experiencing “white envy.” Thank God the doesn’t act like the church.

The thing is, when it comes to voting, “quirkiness” is not an asset. Labyrinthine, confusing processes make voting inaccessible and untrustworthy — the very things we should oppose. Iowa should do away with caucuses *and* move back in line for a while.

People are like “I don’t understand how you can fuck up using an app” as if we don’t spend all our time on this one ruining our lives everyday

The rest of the anchors refusing to attend a pre-SOTU spin-and-schmooze session seems like the absolute minimum they should do here.

These conspiracy theories are killing me. The Iowa caucus is run by old white volunteers--what's more likely, that they rigged the entire primary or they had trouble with an app?

Coalition-building in suburban areas largely driven by middle-aged women gets dismissed as fundamentally unserious even when successful. Coalition-building among traditional labor types by young radicals gets celebrated as real, muscular politics, even when it falls flat

I abhor conspiracy shit of every stripe because it so overstates actual human capacity and obliterates context. But man if the actual real DNC tried to fix a primary it would be exactly this chaotic and fucked. John Kasich would win it somehow, and we'd find out in April.

This stat from is really eye opening: "it only takes 43 participants in tiny Fremont County to win a delegate from a caucus, but in Johnson and Story counties, which both host state universities, it takes more than 200."
