I'd say Abstinence-Only at cons is the ideal social rule we should abide by as a community. Drug education is important, safe use even more so... but... dude. You can't ignore the stream of ambulances at every con.

Abstinence only does not and will not work in this situation. People who want to use will do so. Harm Reduction approaches would be far more effective.
-
This is true; and why I was setting up the ground work for Party Safe Seattle for RF 2016... you know... before the con died. However, encouraging abstinence for non-experienced partyers at cons should be ideal. Situational abstinence IS harm reduction.
-
Ah, thank you for that perspective, I see your point more clearly now. You're right, for those who are inexperienced or uneducated, abstinence might be the better solution. However, my goal would be to increase education for those that have already decided to use.

But addressing it requires us to admit that there's a problem, and it's so much easier for us to just sweep it under the rug and ignore the constant stream of ambulances outside the con
-
It's not an easy talk. I wouldn't say drug use is a "problem" for us, but unsafe use is a problem for everyone.
-
We definitely need to have that talk about alcohol, to me the biggest drug problem in furry by far.
-
It's the most prominent and probably the most abused at furry cons, yes, I agree.
-
I forgot to include that I agreed with your initial tweet. A+

Do not buy from strangers. If you do plan on taking drugs, always make sure it's from someone you know & trust, and it's tested. Otherwise, don't bother. Better safe than sorry!
-
And if you live on the west coast, Naloxone kits.
-
If you live on any coast at this point. PA is one of the leading states for overdoses now.
-
I was unaware of this. That's a little unnerving.

Over 5,000 overdose deaths last year

Agreed. Like everyone has their thing. But what should be done, is that for folks that want to do drugs. Do it safely, weather that be done in a spot in the convention that has trained staff on hand. Or in their own rooms under the supervision of trusted friends. Encourage safety
-
As mentioned by a con organizer in this threat, involving con staff like that is a grey area that has potential legal implications.
-
Agreed. And I see that post now. It is a legal gray area. Then suddenly the question is, how do cons encourage safe drug use, but not suddenly have every drug user within 100km find out that the furry convention is in town so they can do drugs.
-
I think the latter part of you comment is an over-exaggeration >.>
-
Yeah... it’s a touch of an exaggeration.
