Actually, I quite enjoyed references day. I used to be fairly haphazard about references when writing a chapter, then when a draft was done I would devote a day to formatting all the references, and when it was done my day's work was done.

It rarely took all day, it was fairly zen, and it was a small achievable, perfectable task that felt very satisfying in contrast to the sisyphean task that is writing the thesis itself.

AAAAAAAActually I'm misrepresenting here. I never worked on my thesis all day. My wife worked full time and my kids weren't school age (one was eventually), so I stayed home with them all day, then ate supper with them, then put the kids to bed, THEN went to work.

I used to go to the library as soon as the kids were in bed and stay until they closed at 12:30. Then often I'd work more at home, then be up with the kids in the morning. I'm exhausted just remembering it.

Same. I still find that they don’t work well for me: they seem much more effective for citing lots of current scholarship that is well indexed but bad if you regularly cite some German scholar’s 1958 article, or someone’s older book, etc.
-
I did the same. I also find that if I do the citations by hand I have a better chance at remembering them for future work.

I still do all of mine by hand. I can’t see how zotero would help.
-
I will admit though that Google Books and JSTOR make it just copy/paste most of the time, and then reformat for the specific journal.

I still do all of mine by hand (half at the time, half later). I've tried using ref software but find it breaks my connection to the piece. (Plus, the first time I tried one in early 2000s, files with more than 100 refs just crashed and sometimes lost their main content too!)

Zoterobib is the best for doing by hand
