During my master's program, my former white cis-gender male advisor made an Indigenous woman (Native Hawaiian) quit our program. He almost forced me out too. Our labmates were more interested in getting the gossip than standing up for us.

Our colleagues/labmates privately talked to us about how bad of a mentor and person he was...yet all of them still work with him bc he is well-known in our field of study. Most performative allies aren't willing to jeopardize their careers for a POC.

This is one of the greatest lessons higher academia taught me...performative allyship is far too common in academic settings & further marginalizes Black & Indigenous scholars who are URM (underrepresented minorities) in STEM.

My Ph.D. advisor is a white woman from Finland who has been ostracized by our college & department bc she stands up for me & other URM students. So yes, not all white folks are performative allies. She is the reason why I made it through graduate school.

Oh gosh. Have I met a LOT of those! Strangely many were women who I had trusted to back me when I was doing what they had asked me to do.
