I appreciate this @benwallacewells profile of @chesaboudin and his battle against a recall campaign. A few thoughts on things it raises—& that I wished it raised: 1/https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-inquiry/the-trial-of-chesa-boudin?link_id=1&can_id=04fe5ce1ccd3fad0d0a5ad8db2e703ea&source=email-the-coordinated-republican-attack-on-san-francisco&email_referrer=email_1247903&email_subject=new-yorker-chesa-embodies-the-hope-for-criminal-justice-reform …

A small point but it’s wrong to liken Boudin to Harris. As @larabazelon noted in 2019, Harris was no progressive prosecutor: “Time after time, when progressives urged her to embrace criminal justice reforms … Ms. Harris opposed them or stayed silent.” https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/opinion/kamala-harris-criminal-justice.html … 2/pic.twitter.com/mZpHVWhTq7

The article does a great job on the contingency of the conditions created by the pandemic: people’s experiences & perceptions of crime and safety have changed, which is driving the response above empirical evidence 3/pic.twitter.com/rziP7UMg87

It highlights some of the good things Chesa has done as DA: eliminating cash bail, decarcerating the SF jail by almost 50%, pursuing restorative justice and non-punitive solutions where possible, taking police violence seriously. All of which runs up against city elites’ norms 4/

I wish the article gave more attention to the organized base of opposition. The recall effort didn’t begin bc Chesa bungled something. It is the outgrowth of well-funded rightwing opposition that tried to defeat his candidacy and now wants to end his time in office. 5/

It’s not just a “backlash” as the article describes. It’s what @VeslaWeaver, speaking about 1960s, has called a “frontlash”: “policies related to crime were part of a critical episode in race-making and protracted contest over the political agenda.” https://veslaweaver.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/weaver2007.pdf … 6/

When we understand the attacks on Boudin as a frontlash—organized campaigns by the Right to reassert dominance over race & politics more broadly—we can see how malicious the opposition has been. They’ve lied. A lot! @radleybalko chronicled it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/06/14/bogus-backlash-against-progressive-prosecutors/ … 7/

All of which brings up something the article doesn’t touch on but which I hope people are talking about: the power & limits of electing “progressive prosecutors” (with the caveat that most claiming the mantle are not that progressive!) 8/

Abolitionists obviously don’t want prosecutors at all. If DAs are gonna exist, though, I’d rather people like Chesa occupy that role—not to redeem the position but bc it gives more political space to fight for the kind of transformations we need, including against the DA 9/

The problem is that DAs are most powerful when doing the bidding of cops & chamber of commerce. Both groups are against Chesa, together with unscrupulous media attacks, all of which limits what he can do. More impt, DA doesn’t control housing or other areas of health & safety 10/

The article sums this up with a perhaps unconscious riff on Gramsci’s line: “the old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.” https://www.newyorker.com/news/annals-of-inquiry/the-trial-of-chesa-boudin?link_id=1&can_id=04fe5ce1ccd3fad0d0a5ad8db2e703ea&source=email-the-coordinated-republican-attack-on-san-francisco&email_referrer=email_1247903&email_subject=new-yorker-chesa-embodies-the-hope-for-criminal-justice-reform … 11/pic.twitter.com/uiMUX3Z9sb

In sum: 1) the monsters are ferocious & will grow more vicious in attacking & trying to reign in any progressive in power 2) it will take more than one branch of city government to bring about even the short and medium term changes we need. 12/

It would be great if media gave deeper & more consistent attention to class power alongside the contingency of immediacy: the campaign against Boudin is no different in its backing than those against leftwing DAs, city councilors, & others at all to the left of the DNC. 13/

Mass incarceration won’t be defeated at the ballot box, but people are trying hard to uphold it that way. An end to the prison regime will require movements & to stand up against the Right (incl media) while meeting people’s needs & building alternate forms of public safety. /fin
