I generally respect your opinion, @VPrasadMDMPH, but this is not a good one...https://twitter.com/VPrasadMDMPH/status/1420196315116445701 …

hell, if I had to rank issues of structural racism in schools, virtual learning falls far behind: - disproportionate disciplinary action against Black students - inadequate funding of public schools that serve a predominant Black population - policing in schools*

not to mention: - lead- and asbestos-filled school buildings (yes. this is happening today in cities like Philly...) - lack of heating and/or air conditioning - micro and macroaggressions directly from teachers*

but in essence, they said that we (aka those of us in medicine) need to rethink our approach to asthma triggers bc we've been placing blame on Black and brown households as sites for allergens and asthma triggers. then we sent all those kids home for virtual learning...

I do not have children of my own, but if I did, I would 100% figure out how to homeschool my child this year because all the normal racist BS from US schools is one thing... add on a pandemic??? where children under 12 still aren't vaccinated? and now when masks aren't required?pic.twitter.com/L1iv3guTQa

Black families have *been* telling us that they'd rather have their kids at home you simply cannot be serious to say that virtual learning is the greatest issue of structural racism when Black people have 1) told you that the racism has *been* there, and 2) straight up disagree

and that's me focusing on the argument that virtual learning is one of the biggest forms of structural racism *in schools* I haven't even *touched* the idea that it's one of the biggest forms of structural racism *in 2020-2021*. did we live through the same year??

wasn't it just last summer that corporations and non-profits committed to "being anti-racist"* after the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests?? *aka, posting

police continue to terrorize and murder Black people on a daily basis. the prison industrial complex exists. poverty disproportionately affects Black folks, both urban and rural. (please don't forget that hella Black people, esp in the South, are rural af)

Black and brown people are disproportionately underinsured and/or uninsured. and yet insurance status doesn't guarantee access to healthcare. and when we do receive medical care, we're at the mercy of racist providers and systems.

sorry. I'm getting snarky now bc I'm frustrated. the levels of racism we face as Black people in this country are... overwhelming. and yet we're focusing on the wrong thing here. I'm sooo tired.

I still think going back to in-person school is not a good idea in the middle of a pandemic with the Delta variant taking over the way it is. but calling this the greatest issue of structural racism for the past year is a step too far for me.

please. I beg. make your points without trying to make it The Issue™ of the year / our time / the century

I say this bc even my friends in the
#singlepayer world overstate* how important their cause is when, you know, Black people are dying... *e.g. "single payer is the civil rights issue of our generation"pic.twitter.com/7c1JoiTQrzShow this thread

, schools closed because there has been little investment in infrastructure. That’s a pretty high ranked structural racism. Many kids benefited from online instruction because they didn’t have to deal with school to prison pipeline bullshit.
