That's so wrong on so many levels ... If planting a tree is not a part of the solution, then removing one should not be a part of the problem ... But it is. Planting trees is a part of the solution, especially if done in desert.

Seriously?! The point made is that planting trees can never undo emitting fossil carbon. It says nothing about the rights and wrongs of deforestation which obviously needs to stop and be reversed.

That is a halfopinion. Trees, soil, biomass per se, capture carbon. The captured carbon typically never burns up all over the world at the same time. If it does we have a different problem. Planting trees can be a part of the solution, never the only one, agreed.

I expected this to be controversial. The fundamental point is that trees don't take carbon from atmosphere and put it back in the geosphere.

Lots of my excellent students made these points in their coursework... One reason I always bring this topic up is that we are just not talking enough about these choices and how effective (or not) they are, as part of the public conversation.
