So he makes 2 different arguments there 1. Renewables only solve electricity which is only 25% of emissions. 2. The economics and politics are still working against the technological solutions we have. I think he overstates 1, but 2 seems hard to deny

The analysis for the UK seems to be that if we have the political will, the tech should get us to about a 90% cut on 1990 levels. But yeah, 2, getting that political will at global scale just isn’t happening so far

Multiple studies have shown that 80% non-fossil electricity is entirely doable with no significant impact to costs or reliability. Many of those show 100% being possible too on reliability, but more costly.

Hydro is a nonstarter in the U. S. We can thank environmentalists for that. Nukes are possible but big sales effort and regulatory change is required. Ideologues won't accept the downsides of industrial scale power gen.
