They like to blame Trump for the public's distrust in the media, but garbage like this does more damage than Trump's mean tweets could ever hope to achieve. There's mistakes and then there's dishonest reporting. CNN is a mess.
So Trump antagonist Michael Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis was the anonymous source who provided CNN with an unverified anti-Trump story that he later disproved. That's their game. It doesn't matter if anonymous sourced reports are true. They're almost never disproved (this is unusual cuz Davis admitted he lied). But think about all the anonymous sourced reports that we never prove either way? It never matters, it's all about narratives
