Is it just me or does the level of villain in Internet dystopia narratives keep getting weaker? Key escrow dystopia: major governments (powerful!) DRM dystopia: IT+CE firms with devices everywhere (unavoidable!) Surveillance capitalism dystopia: basically, list brokers (meh)

According to the Roomba privacy policy they transfer info to Amazon and Google if you connect their apps. Now I wonder how the ads you get from those companies will change depending on quantity/age of dog dookie in your house

"The second thing to make clear is that these glasses do NOT stream to Facebook or post directly to your Facebook or Instagram." tbh "this product does not (creepy thing)" is Big Tech PR speak for "next software release, this product _will_ (creepy thing)"

On the web, if you know what options to use, you can pick and choose whose content your ad runs on, or doesn't. On big social sites, not so much. On social, the context for your ad might even be something mandated by a controversial politician

Facebook makes a lot of noise about supporting small businesses, but in practice they put the interests of their scam advertisers ahead of legit companies that advertise on there.

Facebook Custom Audiences, though, don't support seed addresses. If someone uses a stolen list for other kinds of direct marketing, the list owner will see the seeds getting contacted and know what happened. The rules of , though, are in the scammer's favor.

Every other direct marketing medium, since the days of steam, has supported "seed addresses." Put special entries on your customer list so that you know if it gets misused. Pretty basic stuff. (yes, it's like "canary traps" in counterintelligence, but for marketing)

Well, the company whose customer list got "borrowed" by the scammer has the same question.

One area they missed: did you ever check your ad settings for the companies that uploaded your info, and ask yourself, "how did that sketchy company get my email address or phone number?"

Yes, I'm still wondering, "why are there so many scam ads on Facebook?" Just read this from

    4. Non-readers of health sites get targeted, but never had a chance to make a choice regarding the use of their negative space data (this is still a thing even if the consent from step 1 is 100% transparent, legit, and dark pattern free)

Also confirmed: every single Facebook advertiser is still running on the same kind of content (but inside a platform where independent consultants are prevented from seeing which brands are sponsoring what)
