for January 31: . Photo verification took me a while, but this is a big one so worth it to get out of. (The less "people-based marketing" can reach me, the more that advertisers have to pay for content I want to read.)

Advertisers in France now required to publicly report the list of sites where their ads run. "The new law is known as the “Sleeping Giants” Amendment...." (subscribers to the newsletter may also enjoy BRANDED imho.)

All the best marketers I know are also concerned citizens, friends, and family members. So isn't just a checklist item. The content and data practices that a brand chooses to support are a recruiting and retention issue for marketing talent. Anyway, go subscribe:

Yup. Making data access closed by default, purposeful when the user is asked, and minimal to get the job done is the challenge for the next decade. That's what we need to do for our beloved web platform.

Every single company that designs systems that track or store any personal data, even as a byproduct of the core service, needs to have the "Stalker Ex" as one of their core personas from the very beginning. If you haven't personally been stalked, 100% you know someone who has.

imho web publishers need people who look at the market for audience data the way that people at hardware product companies look at the market for parts and consumables

"For more than a century, no one knew if advertising worked, if it drove people who would otherwise not buy a thing to buy that thing." So the pre-Internet Procter and Gamble had people in marketing using computers for what, then? Were they playing Zork?
