Why use a photo like this? It also disturbed me when my mother died and people shared questionable photos of her in her 90s rather than when she was young(er) and beautiful.

Did this NYT Style columnist just write "Carnaby Road"?

Just tried OMNY (paying for bus/subway rides with my phone) for the first time. - Pro: Easy, don't have to worry about whether I have money on my Metrocard, don't have to worry abut failing Metrocards - Con: Every move I make will now be listed in five databases – at Manhattan Bridge

...Features both Jimmy Stewart and Robert Mitchum toward the end of their careers. Mitchum is still the wise-ass with all the good lines; Stewart barely hanging on (allegedly had trouble remembering his lines). Joan Collins unbelievably beautiful.

Saw Michael Winner's adaptation of "The Big Sleep" (1978) last night. A little hard to keep track of the convoluted story line, but what a gorgeous film. It's lit like a '70s Brit TV series, and every camera shot is stunning. Lots of wide-angle street scenes, mostly in London.

Wow I love this—me and my completely illegible notebooks and geometric storyline diagrams are vindicated by good old Fyodor!

I had no idea that Tanega was a painter. This looks unmissable.

Always loved this line in "Hernando's Hideaway" (from The Pajama Game): If you go to some other, lame-ass nightclub, "You'll meet your Uncle Max and everyone you know."

Modified my Jazz Bass so that I can see the fret markers on dark stages. Cost: about $3.

Has "Sharpie" replaced "magic marker" as the generic term for that thing? The shape of traditional magic markers is slightly different. Do people still say "magic marker" when the tip is rectangular rather than pointy?

...Radle's bass part on the second half of the verse ("You've been running...") is sheer genius.

On the subject of Eric Clapton: The best things on "Layla" (the song) are Duane Allman, Carl Radle (bass), and Jim Gordon (drums).

Speaking of mavens, I think the first time I heard the word was from Spike Lee, who was in my HS homeroom class. He always used to say "I'm the sports maven." Which may have been true, but every guy in that class was obsessed with sports. I was transitioning from sports to music. – at John Dewey High School

...Fun rich-rock-star fact: When John Entwistle found out that Gibson was going to discontinue the Thunderbird he bought up as many as he could. He also didn't like the neck, so he had Fender Precision necks grafted onto all of them.

Bass guitar news: Gibson has announced a reissue of the "non-reverse" Thunderbird, a beautiful instrument I've always coveted (seen here in the hands of one of my childhood heroes).

Reading a book written in impenetrable acadamese, I suddenly come across a sentence that makes some kind of sense and I'm so grateful. It's like you're being held hostage and the kidnapper, in a weak moment, decides to let you have a nice meal.
