saying you made a quantum measurement: • boring • ontologically non-committal saying "I've collapsed the wavefunction of the universe": • badass • hints that you can collapse other parts of the multiverse • instantly divides physicists into friends and foes

Let me add the most obviously necessary change to academic culture: No meetings, seminars, conferences or workshops at times when childcare is usually unavailable, ie past 5pm and on weekends.

I wonder how many Americans know that Washington, DC and Washington (the state) are on opposite sides of the country, or what "DC" stands for? (No, I didn't know the Kansas City Chiefs are from the Kansas City in Missouri, but then I'm not American, a football fan, or POTUS.)

In my opinion we really need to come up with a good way to disambiguate between the engineering and theoretical CS meanings, it would make everyone’s life a lot easier! And would make it easier to evaluate if someone is promising something silly

And I thought my MIP*=RE cake joke was niche. I wonder what's the most niche joke ever told on Twitter?

🤔 Not sure if this means danger of quantum entanglement or just loads of cables etc hanging from the ceiling.

Targeted ad? (Yes, I clicked through out of curiosity. No, it has nothing actually to do with quantum computers. But good for whatever spammy ad company figured out I'm interested in quantum computers, I guess.)

I'd known for a long time how bad the situation is for American parental leave, but actually being a parent really underscores this. It is totally inconceivable for me to imagine going back to work after *two weeks* for either parent, much less the one who gave birth.

I call this Groucho's law: you should never work on any project for which can get funding. Tongue-in-cheek, but there's a grain of truth to it: the easier funding is to get, the more likely something like it would have happened anyway.

I got a massage and noticed afterwards their promo material says they use quantum physics. I'm very disappointed now that I did not notice any such phenomenon. Also, why doesn't any massage therapist claim they use general relativity? I certainly noticed mass and acceleration.

References to Einstein as "Swiss" or "German-Swiss" do exist on the Internet, and Google Arts & Culture tells me... it's complicated:

Does anyone outside of Switzerland or who is not Swiss refer to Albert Einstein as a "Swiss scientist"? I've always heard German-American (or some combo of Jewish/German/American depending on context) but apparently in Switzerland he's just Swiss.

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.
