Ill informed comment of the day - what experience of #faithschools do you actually have Daniel? Both my children were at a CofE State Primary, their classmates consisted of Roman Catholics, Athiests, Muslims, Hindus and Methodists, amongst others. #inclusive education

I trained as a primary school teacher initially and worked in them.

Thank you Daniel. It's so shocking that it's possible for state-funded schools to operate selective admissions on the basis of faith. I think it's something that a lot of people are not aware of - unless they have primary age children.

Who are you to tell decent, law abiding, tax paying parents where to send their children for the best education? Why don’t you investigate why non-faith schools fail to attain the same success levels as faith schools?

I Completely agree... I hate that the local religious schools get govt money. I hate that they are better than the non religious local schools... Religious schools should be private schools and govt funding could help improve the non religious schools
-
Why are they better than non-religious local schools? Is it simply a matter of extra budget from the generosity of believers? Or do people with a faith do better in exams?

That bit about ethos over performance is very interesting. School only takes up a small part of our lives but its our most formative years, and some primary school children have such an unhappy time.

And where is the overstretched education budget going to find the 10% that the faith communities supply for capital and maintenance costs? Good luck with that
-
This is hilarious. 10% of a tiny capital budget (due to no money available) is a tiny contribution.....and they only pay it in the case of voluntary aided schools, not the majority of voluntary controlled schools which are funded entirely by the tax payers
-
Catholic dioceses have maintenance costs for VA schools

Yes, as someone who went through Catholic schools (admittedly one that did an afternoon about sex education in the 60s) secular schools should be it.

It’s an odd paradox. Faith should always be personal acceptance and not something that is imposed.
-
CofE schools don't impose faith. They teach national curriculum because they are all state schools, just like other state schools. They were set up before state schools because no-one else would teach ordinary kids and they set the pace for the education system we have today.
-
You've never worked in one, have you?
-
Probably had more experience of them in my work than most teachers. Also have numerous friends and colleagues who have.
-
So you'll know that C of E schools have an inspection from the diocese which assesses the Christian vision of the school and awards schools where leadership are promoting this vision. In order to get good or outstanding, leaders shout Christianity from the rooftops.
-
We'll have to disagree on that. Religious knowledge is important in today's world. CofE schools teach about religion as a whole, so kids can choose for themselves. Perhaps the answer is for better RE in other schools.
-
Of course religious knowledge is important. No one's suggesting we ban RE lessons. But prayers before lunch? Prayer corners in each classroom? Children chanting 'Peace of the lord be with you' in whole school worship? You can't disagree with facts.
-
What “prayers before lunch? Prayer corners in each classroom? Children chanting 'Peace of the lord be with you' in whole school worship?” The fourteen years I spent in four different CofE schools had none of those.
