”Fleeing your home is not a crime, it is a human right. Criminalising a person’s flight at the same time as criminalising those who seek to save them is tragic. Allowing this dehumanising rhetoric to go unchallenged is a threat to all of us.”

I know I retweet a lot of posts but there's a good reason, she's incredibly knowledgeable, more so than I, and tends to be spot on the mark, as with this thread. Highly recommend reading.

This is why I have zero tolerance for the whole "patriotism" nonsense. I get accused all the time of being unpatriotic because I support remain and want to see open borders. Wanting your country not to be some isolated xenophobic backwater isn't being unpatriotic.

Not to rub anyone's nose in it but I have just had to add a new hole to make my belt tighter. Obviously failed at the festive season.

Politicians across the political spectrum have used migrants as scapegoats for a long time but to securitize the language like this harks to the extremes of racism. When verbal attacks such as these are used on migrants physical ones are rarely far behind. 2/2

Escalation of rhetoric against migrants, "national emergency", "major incident", "crisis" etc sets immigration on a war footing. It's language previously more commonly used by far-right than mainstream politicians, demonstrating a concerning and dangerous shift in attitudes. 1/2

I usually like but this is a hideous take. It strikes to the core of the issue with populism, forgiving of persecution of some people if it benefits others. It is a mask for the worst elements of humanity by attempting to legitimise them for the "greater good".

Thread: The real has nothing to do with a handful of trying to make it to the UK and instead everything to do with the way the UK and the rest of the EU has been treating for years. 1/15

I remember people voting to have bendy bananas, can't remember hearing anyone who voted for no bananas. The lack of concern for the serious issues surrounding Brexit is deeply concerning.

Unless and are seriously considering shelling unarmed civilians, which it kind of goes without saying would be bad, then this seems a rather wasteful exercise in political gamesmanship. 1/6

Personal favourite variation on this was Sir Philip Payne-Gallwey apparently telling a racing manager at the Newmarket sales when it was all going a bit crazy. "When all about you are losing their heads, duck and get another drink".

We're back to people's lives being nothing more than a bargaining chip. It doesn't matter whether someone is an EU or non-EU migrant, or a native citizen they deserve to be treated as a human being not a playing piece.

Finally something to remember 2018 fondly for. I know e-books are useful, cheap and all, but honestly how could you go without proper books? Highly recommend if you want to shop online and still support your local independent bookstores
