In either case, someone with the chops to get taken on at News as a grad, one of the hardest places to get into, still also has the chops to get a huge number of other grad jobs that are less morally corrupt.

Without wanting to dive into this argument, if you think there are a "huge number of grad jobs" in this business you have not been paying attention. They are as scarce as hen's teeth and hugely contested

There aren't any in journalism. That was both Richard's and my point throughout. There are a great many professions, from public servant to advertising copywriter, that are both more ethical than working for News Corp, and easier to get jobs in than any kind of journalism.

Yeah I think while you can have a problem with the paper (I do), it's incorrect that Rick's reporting doesn't make a significant difference in the space of NDIS & social issues. Or that you could make that difference copywriting. He's open about the flaws. This is a shallow take.

Look, I actually don’t like fighting. Richard is a great writer. My take was hamfisted. I committed my own cardinal sin of eschewing nuance in my argument. I do have an issue with class in this debate. More importantly, I’m not dumb to the tension. I’ve done what I can.

I won’t do it here because, frankly I am very tired. But I still speak with people from years ago (and just earlier this year) whose circumstances have changed for the better because, and only because, of my reporting. It has kept me going. I can’t do that in copywriting.

And I’m not going to leave an entire industry because of a moral argument that no one else has had to wrestle with, certainly not directly. My life would be so much easier if I did. I don’t like any of [hands survey the horizon] this. It’s not good for my mental health at all.

Am I a bad person? Fuck, maybe! I don’t think I am. But I’m used to those rules because, honestly, I’ve heard it my entire life. Even from my fucking dad! No one has ever been happy with me. Except, and I mean this, the people I have directly and measurably helped.
