Got an hour? Want a long-form lecture on solar and how it fits into climate strategy? Likely not. But, just in case... My talk is up. This is a major 2019 reboot of my 'standard' solar geo talk. bouquets or brickbats welcome.

PM2.5 AQI is 50, it's 200 in Dhaka where I was last week. (Of course this is air pollution not climate, and of course there's a blowhard at the top trying to dismantle it, but for now just enjoy the reasonably clean air)

Out running in NYC rain, struck by the century-long triumph of environmental regulation that allows air so clean in a huge city. We should celebrate environmental success to demonstrate the power of government regulating for public good & driving technological change.

This argument assumes: If X is studied at Harvard then X is happening in the real world. Topics studied at Harvard include: witchcraft, world peace, nuclear war, and interstellar travel. Most (all?) of these are not happening now. Please rethink.

Want to work on solar geoengineering ? Any Harvard faculty in and discipline can supervise. We are keen to have people who take a critical view looking for technical or social failure modes. Applications due 28th Feb.

I get some strange emails....the disturbing thing about this one is that it's unclear if the writer's tongue in in his cheek. The complete text of email from "Dennis Gearon"

Public funding for geoengineering is overdue. Here's the quote I sent John “It’s terrific news. An important step forward. NOAA is the right agency to do this work.” Sent late as I was in rural Bangladesh ()

I used to love reading the CS Monitor in print for it's consistent and balanced global coverage. Exited to be in their cover feature. Thanks to Simon for a thoughtful article

4/4 Why are Bengal Tigers not THE poster animal for climate change? All are in the Sunderbans, at ground zero of the joint impacts of sea level rise and increased cyclone intensity. It's hard to imagine them not extinguished this century. Is it that Polar Bears are white?

3/4 The sundarbans mangrove forest (worlds largest) helps protect Gabura, but it's hard to see how it can survive even 0.5 m more sea level plus a big cyclone. If sundarbans go we loose a natural wonder and folks like Amazing loose protection from cyclones

2/4 The island was last completely flooded in 2009. We were standing on a dyke in bad need of repair. Advanced warning and schools that double as cyclone shelters have sharply reduced deaths . But risk still very high. Riton's site:

1/4 In Bangladesh talking with people about climate change. At S edge of the delta, Gabura Island could not be more climate-vulnerable. Amazed Gazi (left and close up) is 70. He has survived about 10 big cyclones. Riton Quiah (middle) is interpreting.

3/3 A big Q is how much overall views depend on how the survey instrument presented/described SRM. I would love to see this repeated with several different survey instruments that had divergent spin's on SRM to see how much that shapes result.

2/3 It would be very interesting to use same Q's in North America and Europe. My guess (based on some data) is that attitudes would be more negative. Is this that people who feel impacts more are inclined to view SRM more favorably? See Dannenberg:

1/3 Interesting new paper from Masa Sugiyama on SE-Asian view of solar geoengineering. Clever to follow Bostrom and use college students ensures similar education and samples and age that matters.

Thanks! in "How much bulk energy storage is needed to decarbonize electricity?" we find (a) that bats are *long* way from being cost effective for deep decarb of electricity, and (b) there are other ways to to very low carbon intensity.

Finally, at 1:12 there are overclaims about SCoPEx. It's not the first outdoor exp. And I think it's massive overclaim to call this "first really significant study of SG".

Wizards vs Prophets: at 1:03 sets up value conflict between folks who want deeper appreciation of natural world Vs folks who like SG and want tech to keep capitalism rolling. This leaves out folks like me who want SG to preserve nature...
