Local optima are sometimes so much better than previous version of same code and encourages PR adoption. I am for it. But more fundamental work may require your mindset, that is not my line of work though.

Agreed very much. Local optima aren’t necessarily *bad*, they just aren’t as good as they could be, and sometimes they impose unneeded costs (hence the tech debt point).

Software engineering is about turning unmanageable complexity into manageable complexity. Typically by introducing smart concepts, that, once you understand them, are big fun. IMHO, every new smart concept should imply a rewrite.
