I'm lying in bed unable to sleep, my mind boggled by today's developments...and those of the past three years. I am not sure whether it is the scope of the criminality and abuse and corruption and lies or whether it is the number of GOP leaders who support and defend them.
No, I'm sure. It's the latter. The scope is mind-boggling and far outstrips the worst dystopian nightmare of a presidency I ever could have imagined. But it is made possible by the McConnells and the Barrs and Fox and Breitbart and the GOP and the NRA.
There is a massive industry dedicated to gutting our Constitution, undermining the rule of law in America, devastating our standing in the world, despoiling our environment and empowering our enemies. And thus far nothing has been able to stop it or even slow it down.
Perhaps that is changing now. We can hope or sleepless nights will be all we are left with as we live in a place that used to be the world's leading democracy, that used to be the United States of America. But those are the stakes.
If the criminalization of the U.S. government continues, is institutionalized and preserved, if the Russians and those so hungry for tax and regulatory cuts that they would sacrifice an entire nation and 240 years of history to them win, then all will be ashes.
But if this moment really is a sea change--not only of revelations but of action--and we demand answers and facts and accountability, then there is hope. But it can't stop with a deal that let's Trump and his cronies off the hook. It can't stop with a symbolic victory...
...as he and his thugs slouch off the stage but the corrupt infrastructure behind them remains. No, the only path to survival and to reclaiming our country is that Trump, Barr, McConnell and the rest must be brought to justice--and the forces that empowered them be defeated.
Trump, Trumpism & scorched-earth gut-the-government, serve-the-few Republicanism must be once & for all undone. By remaining faithful to the law & democracy & our ideals. And by addressing what has gone wrong in our society, not just for the past 3 years, but for the past 40.
As shaken as I am by recent events, I am also more hopeful than I have been since Trump took office that we may have taken a turn for the better outcome. Who knows, someday we may look back at now and say, this is when America revealed its resilience and its decency.
At least that is the thought I need for this night...and the one I leave to all of you. Have a good night...and with some luck, a better week, month and year ahead.
