This means, even with crowd-funded campaigns gaining some traction, that the real power to pick candidates, regardless of party, lies with the very rich. Until that changes, our system will never be truly representative, corruption will reign and inequality will grow.

You can stop right here. This is what, at its core, is wrong with American politics. Only the uber-wealthy or mega-connected, need apply. It just leaves too many brilliant options on the outside looking in. At its worst? You get trumped.

This is exactly what happened to a good friend who lives in Virginia and was running for senate. He’s well known in the party, had lots of supporters from the get go and was/is more than qualified, but couldn’t even get in the game because he didn’t have enough money behind him.
