…Like, the 17/18 distinction only matters to people where the age of majority is 18, & that's pretty arbitrarily assigned. For some cultures, this happened 5 years ago on NYE 2012/2013, or two years later in 2014/2015. For some, it's still waiting three years away in 2020/2021…

…For US car insurers & rental agencies, it's way off in 2024/2025. Every turn of every year separates out those above an age and those below it, and even that turn and that year is relative verging on arbitrary. Every second, space and time are born anew. Every moment is magic.

It's weirder than that IMHO in that most cultures have a ritual that marks adulthood, sometimes at a specific age, sometimes just when they're ready. Forgoing the ritual and making it an exact birthday is... modern.
