I love this so much. It fits with my daily reminder than in the Western world, stairs are objectively much more dangerous than terrorism.https://twitter.com/AstroKatie/status/868732741000454144 …

We are terrible at judging risk and even worse at acting rationally about it. Great piece by @KetanJ0 https://ketanjoshi.co/2017/05/28/why-dishing-out-the-stats-on-risk-doesnt-change-our-perception-of-terror-threats/ …

Is variance not a part of your model, then?

12000 people die from stairs in the US each year. In which year did terrorism kill 12000 people again? https://www.attorneywdkickham.com/stairway-staircase-accidents.html …

I think stairs still win at QALYs, except - what, 2001? Kids die on stairs, too: 65+ deaths are only 75% of deaths. https://www.sacramentoinjuryattorneysblog.com/2015/07/statistics-on-stairway-falls.html …

25% of 12000 leaves 3000 deaths below 65 years old, plus 9000 seniors. That'll comfortably beat terrorism in 2001 in the US, I suspect.

Thanks! Though whether we consider all casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan as consequences of terrorism is a matter of taste.

I mean to say that terrorism is higher variance than stairs; I'm not comfortable supposing we've seen the upper bound. Variance is scary.
