There is no right or wrong here, it's just convention. Actually I claim that the CASIO does what I expect.

If I see an expression "1/ab" in an academic paper (written in one line, not 1 over ab), I read 1/(ab). Everybody does it like that.

I must admit I didn't do the exercise of replacing ÷ with / and re-reading the formula (subst-before-parse) :)
