Correct. 臺灣日治時期. Japan also occupied Indonesia. When Japan was defeated, Indonesia did not go back to the Dutch, they were free.

The Japanese are relatively well thought of in Taiwan. But it was under *Chinese* control when occupied. Critical difference.

Had Japan not occupied Formosa or Indonesia, I am guessing their status today would be very different, e.g. Indonesia still Dutch.

I don't think that is how the Japanese intended to free those areas from other imperialists, but they succeeded indirectly anyway.
